About the Presentation:

Electromagnetic Interference, or EMI, is an engineering design and test subject that strikes anxiety in the hearts of many systems engineers.  Some claim that it is simply black magic.  This presentation will attempt to demystify the subject and give the listeners a basic understanding of the various topics within EMI with respect to a simple “source/victim” model.  The focus will be on DoD standards dealing with EMI such as MIL-STD-461 as well as systems integration standards for other related topics like lightning and electromagnetic pulse.  Most important will be explanations for the minefield of terminology and phenomena that accompany the disciplines surrounding EMI.

About The Speaker:

Briand has spent his entire career at Lockheed Martin working the technical issues associated with electromagnetic environmental effects (EEE, also known as EMC or EMI work).  The first 12 years of his career were spent mastering EMI equipment level design and test at Lockheed Sanders in New Hampshire.  He then moved his young family to Georgia where he performed aircraft level development, design, and test as the lead EEE engineer on the F-22 program. His technical leadership skills were honed on the F-22, by leading a team of engineers from Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Boeing and the Air Force. He oversaw the verification and closure of 22 separate requirements for F-22, culminating in the complete closure of EMD for F-22.  Tired of staying earthbound, he moved to Denver Colorado where he worked EMI and magnetics issues for the Juno project.  The challenge of a very nasty Jovian environment coupled with enormous solar arrays (first of its kind) lead to innovative solutions assuring that the multiple mission instruments on the spacecraft worked compatibly.  Completing Juno, Briand moved here to Florida where he is presently a senior manager overseeing the LM Missiles and Fire Control EMI Lab.  His technical skill set includes EMI, EMC, lightning, TEMPEST, ESD and filter design. Briand has served on the DoD MIL-STD-464 and MIL-STD-461 specification review committees as one of three industry representatives. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Science EE degree from Northeastern University.
