Shaw Main Streets

Shaw Main Streets, Inc. (SMS) is a non-profit, community-based, organization that relies on the time, talent, and treasures of volunteers to implement the highly acclaimed Main Street Four Point Approach® (National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Main Street Center, www.mainstreet.org).
Address: 1426 9th Street NW
Phone:  202-265-7429
Historically, Shaw has been one of Washington, DC’s most important commercial corridors. Upper 7th Street was a continuation of the city’s premier commercial street, south of Massachusetts Avenue, until the 1960s. A 21st century entrepreneurial spirit now honors and reflects the community’s rich cultural heritage. Interest in this diverse, mixed-use neighborhood directly adjacent to downtown has grown dramatically in recent years as a result of the construction of the new $850 million, 2.3 million square foot Convention Center in Shaw’s commercial corridor.

Alongside these larger projects, local businesses are expanding and improving their goods and services to meet the needs of not only conventioneers and downtown tourists, but also neighborhood and DC residents and the Howard University community.  The corridor also links downtown and the Convention Center to the U Street entertainment district, long known as Washington’s Black Broadway.
