IMPROVISING COMPOSITIONALLY with Erik Jekabson

Participants study classic jazz solos and work on improvising “compositionally” — structuring their solos with connecting threads and an overall sense of cohesion. Special attention is paid to motivic development. Students play in the workshop, using different exercises to develop their solos. For intermediate to advanced players; please bring your instrument.

Highly regarded as both an improviser and a composer, trumpeter Erik Jekabson holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music from the Oberlin Conservatory and San Francisco Conservatory respectively. He has toured with John Mayer, Illinois Jacquet and Galactic and has released several albums featuring original compositions, including the recent Live at the Hillside Club featuring John Santos.
