This is a one-day workshop on Saturday, May 31 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (We'll break at lunchtime for a bite to eat in Overton Square!)
Basic machine-sewing skills are required, but beginning quilters are welcome!
Join Mary Allison Cates for a day of beautiful and intuitive improv quilting! Set aside your rulers, rotary cutters, and internal voices of judgment, and experiment with this process that is raucous and meditative all at once!
Mary Allison will introduce themes and techniques that often appear in improv quilts such as curved piecing, topstitching warps, floating squares, and splitting and stitching, but how students use and combine these principles is a mystery that will unfold as they sew!
Some students will finish quilt tops during the workshop and others will need to do some follow-up sewing at home. While Mary Allison will discuss quilting and binding, in-depth instruction on these topics is not included in the scope of the workshop.
For a throw-sized quilt top, participants will need to purchase/provide neutral-colored thread and about 5 and a half yards of assorted fabrics (adjust quantities for smaller or larger quilts). All supplies will be available at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount. Conformation e-mail will include tips and guidelines for choosing fabric.
Bring your own machine or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines.
