Silica has been on OSHA’s radar for nearly a decade. Recently, OSHA issued a final rule that establishes reduced levels of exposure and requirements for comprehensive programs designed to identify and protect employees exposed to the hazards of silica.
Nearly every craft and construction project has the potential for exposure to silica, so contractors must become familiar with the new law and prepare for the enforcement date of July, 2017. This is a very complex regulation with various options contractors can take to address compliance. The actions necessary to comply will take time, investment in tools and equipment, or both. More importantly, the new standard will require medical exams, including chest x-rays, for all workers potentially exposed to silica dust. This will be a delicate issue and may reveal lung damage caused by work or non-work related exposures. Gary Glader from The Horton Group will explain the new regulation in detail and discuss practical steps contractors can take now to prepare for the compliance deadline.
