Event Details

As part of a new arts and anti-violence initiative called the Imagine If projectSexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM) is partnering with Tapp's Arts Center to conduct free arts workshops with community members and groups to create art of all genres and media (including visual, film, photography, creative writing, etc.) around the theme of imagining a world without violence. Workshops will be held twice a month January through March 2014. This weekend's workshop will include a recreational drumming program followed by free time to work creatively in whichever genre/media you prefer (we'll have some art supplies available for you to dabble with at Tapp's!).

Remo HealthRHYTHMS® is a recreational group drumming program that focuses on individual and group empowerment, stress relief and wellness, and personal expression. It is a unique aesthetic experience. Best of all, anyone can take part--and it's FUN! The group will be facilitated by Cyndi Boot of Rhythmic Memory. All drums and percussion instruments will be provided. To learn more about Cyndi and the benefits of group drumming visit www.rhythmicmemory.com.

We invite people of all ages and artistic backgrounds to join us for our free arts workshopsYou don't have to be an artist or writer to participate, just be open and willing to delve into your pool of creativity.

The creative pieces made in these workshops can be created just for fun, for personal growth and healing, or to submit for display during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April). STSM will use a selection of the pieces submitted through this campaign to be displayed at Tapp’s Arts Center for the April 3 kickoff for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and throughout the month of April.

For more information on the Imagine If project or to submit a piece, please contact STSM's Prevention Education Coordinator Alexis Stratton at pec@stsm.org or 803-790-8208.

The Imagine If Project and The Healing Art Program

What if we lived in a world without violence? Without bullying? Without sexual assault and abuse? What would it look like? How would we get there?

The Imagine If project invites Midlands community members to recognize, identify, and name the elements of violence around them and imagine a world in which those things do not exist. STSM will conduct arts workshops with local schools and community groups around the theme of imagining a world without violence. We are also inviting local artists and community members to create and submit works responding to this prompt.

STSM will use a selection of the pieces created through this campaign to be displayed at the kickoff for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) on April 3 at Tapp’s Arts Center in downtown Columbia, as well as at other SAAM events. At the SAAM kickoff, both project participants and other local writers, artists, and musicians will be invited to speak out about violence and its prevention while sharing their creative work. Selected works will also be displayed at Tapp's Arts Center during the duration of SAAM. Thus, this project will educate and inspire community members to envision the end of sexual violence while allowing them the space to speak out about their own and their community’s experiences.

Tapp's Arts Center (Tapp's) is a diverse, fully functioning arts center and gallery space located in Columbia, SC. The Healing Art Program (HAP) is a spin-off of the Art of Healing Exhibit held August 2013, which showcased local artists that use art in their healing processes. Tapp's believes in the healing power of art as well as the benefits gained by exploring creativity in a group setting. The goal of the HAP is to apply our varied artistic talents towards individuals' healing and personal growth.

The HAP provides an emotional outlet for individuals and groups interested in exploring their creativity through Targeted Art Therapy Groups and Recreational/Activity Based Groups. Our in-house artists include painters, sketch artists, jewelry artisans, photographers, cell phone artists, musicians, ceramics, mixed media, writers, poets, and recording studios/producers. For more information on the Healing Art Program, contact Jim Dukes at 803-988-0013 or info@tappsartscenter.com.
