Imagination Toolbox: Using StarLogo Nova in Your Classroom

The MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP) is conducting an exciting week-long workshop in August at MIT for educators to learn how to bring the new online version of StarLogo into their classes. StarLogo Nova is a graphical programming environment developed at MIT to enable students and teachers with no prior programming experience to create and study 3D games and simulations. Many teachers also use StarLogo projects developed by our community to illustrate various concepts in class, so you do not need to be a programmer to benefit from this software.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have created/planned an activity specifically suited to their classes. For example, a computer teacher may create a guided programming activity, whereas a science teacher may build an ecosystem simulation, and an English teacher may modify a game to make it take place in a scene from a book. Participants will also practice the technical and pedagogical skills necessary to successfully bring this content to their students.
The workshop is open to teachers in all subject areas who have an interest in incorporating computer programming, simulations, or games into their classes. This workshop is ideal for a teacher who has an idea for an activity or learning goal, but needs help developing and sequencing the activity, or needs technical help to program a game or simulation. As in years past, participation in this workshop comes with a year of support, which includes answering questions by email or phone, refresher workshops, and even potential classroom visits from project staff (if your school is within a reasonable driving distance from MIT).
This year is the official public release of StarLogo Nova, and we are looking for innovative teachers who will help us prove its effectiveness in the classroom. We are also hoping that this year's workshop participants will join our online community where teachers can share their questions, experiences, materials, and lessons learned. For this reason, we are requiring that attendees have at least a basic level of experience with our tools before the workshop starts. If you don't have prior experience, you will simply need to attend a fun 1-day Introduction to Programming with Imagination Toolbox workshop, or work through our equivalent self-study materials, prior to attending the week-long workshop.
As in years past, space is limited and expected to sell out. The only cost is a $100 registration fee. (Please contact us if this presents a financial hardship; we want everyone who is truly interested to be able to attend.) We provide all materials, coffee, snacks, lunch, and daily parking passes or a 7-day T-pass. If you are too far from the MIT campus to commute daily, contact us for tips on arranging your own lodging before you register.
