Homecoming event for IIT Alumni of the Chemical Engineering Department. A forum for interaction between past and present IIT students of the Chemical Engineering department.
Keynote Speaker: Edward M. Smith '67
Topic: Life Beyond the Pocket Protector: How Ed Smith, an "accidental" chemical engineer morphed his career from traditional pipeline engineering to a world of finance, politics and international intrigue. It is a story that may sound incredible, but true.
Ed is currently retired, but is working as a consultant to help build the nation of South Sudan. In the past, he was the CEO/president of INTEC Engineering Partnership, Ltd. After INTEC was bought for $108.5 million by WorleyParsons, which was Australia's biggest engineering firm as of 2008, Ed became the country director of WorleyParsons Arabia Ltd. Co. He has led a number of complex pipeline projects and operations including the TransAlaska Pipeline System and multinational developments such as the Russian/Kazakh Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) and the TransCaspian Gas Pipeline project. Additionally, Ed was a manager at Standard Oil of Ohio, and he was the senior advisor for Afghan Policy and Nation Infrastructure Rebuilding for Afghanistan at the US State Department. He also formerly served on the Corporate Council at IREX, an international nonprofit organization providing programs in educational exchange, independent media and civil society development.
In addition to his IIT degree in Chemical Engineering, Ed holds an MBA from Northwestern, and he attended Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
