Automation and Control of Drug Delivery Systems

The automation of biomedical devices can lead to increased safety and efficacy of these systems. In this presentation an overview of the challenges involved in developing and implementing advanced automation techniques for drug delivery systems will be presented. The applications considred include glucose management, regulation of depth of anesthesia, and target controlled infusion. Steps towards fully closed-loop control will be discussed, based on experience with FDA approved devices/systems, such as the Biostator (hospital glucose management), IVAC Titrator (closed-loop blood pressure control), and on-going clinical studies towards a closed-loop artificial pancreas system for type 1 diabetes.

B. Wayne Bequette is a Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Associate Director of the Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS), at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where his research efforts are focused on the modeling and control of biomedical and energy-related processes. He is the Board Secretary for the American Automatic Control Council (AACC), is a founding member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, and serves on the Editorial Board of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. He is an AIChE Fellow, was inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Chemical Engineers, was elected to the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers (AIMBE), and is a Trustee of the Computer Aids for Chemical Engineering (CACHE) Corporation. Professor Bequette is the author of Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation (2003); and Process Dynamics: Modeling, Analysis and Simulation (1998), both published by Prentice Hall. His extracurricular activities include bicycling, skiing and pole-vaulting (where competition in the Master's Division denotes age rather than skill level).
