The Crystal Cathedral Campus (the future Christ Cathedral) represents one of the most intriguing collections of modern architecture in Southern California, if not the world. Believing that architecture is valuable for society, Rev. Robert Schuller strived to design a place that reflected the dignity of the individuals who made it up. However, this approach challenges traditional beliefs regarding architecture, the extremes of which reduce it to a utilitarian function or a utopian dream.
Pulling together the top architects of the twentieth-century (Neutra, Johnson and Meier) Rev. Schuller set out to design an expression of the vision upon which he based the work of Crystal Cathedral Ministries.
Through Rev. Schuller’s own testimony, we will try to better understand what vision of reality and expressive quality he was trying to achieve in the construction of these unprecedented works of architecture.
With the help of the architects that aided in the design of the buildings and experts in the field of architecture we are offered an opportunity to understand the unique place this property holds in the canon of modern architecture.
