Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the most important sculptor of the 17th century ~ considered by many to be the Michelangelo of his age. During a lifetime that spanned over 80 years, he transformed the face of Rome with his spectacular fountains, wonders of marble carving such as the “Apollo and Daphne,” and awe-inspiring decorations for the interior of Saint Peter’s Basilica. The Kimbell will allow visitors a “look over Bernini’s shoulder” as he worked his sculptural magic with the first-ever exhibition devoted to his preparatory models , “Bernini: Sculpting in Clay”. These beautiful works ~ formed by the artist’s own hands ~ were the means by which he explored his ideas in three dimensions and presented them for review to his patrons.
Italian Club of Dallas Members and friends will enjoy a docent-led tour of the exhibit on Saturday, February 9, beginning at 10:00a.m. The exhibition will consist of approximately 35 Bernini terracottas ~ from Harvard, the Musee du Louvre, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Berlin’s Bode Museum, and the Vatican Museum ~ many that have never before been lent. From the Kimbell’s collection will come three masterworks, including the lauded “Moor”, the largest and most highly finished Bernini model. In order to fully represent Bernini’s preparatory process, the exhibition will also include almost 30 of the artist’s drawings.
Following the tour and some free time enjoying the Kimbell’s outstanding permanent collection, those who would like to share their thoughts about the exhibit… or perhaps plan a dream trip to Rome to see the final sculptures in person!... can join in what has become a favorite post-tour activity ~ lunch and bellinis at Taverna Risotteria & Pizzeria in Sundance Square! It’s the perfect way to have the magic of all you’ve learned linger for just a little while longer.
