BIM to Sim: A Panel Discussion on Interoperability

Join us on February 25th for a discussion on interoperability between software tools! We will have a panel of experts in different areas of BIM from architecture and production to energy and daylighting simulation. We all know that you can't use one building information model for all the documentation and analytical needs of high performance building design. Come learn about the workflows that are being used to translate building information between tools, what the limitations of the current tools are and what looks promising in the future. Feel free to come prepared with questions, with your own expertise, or the desire to sit quietly and soak it all in!

Location: Syska Hennessy Group, 800 Corporate Pointe, #200, Culver City, CA 90230

Agenda:
6:00: Social Hour
7:00: Welcome & Introductions
7:15: Panel Discussion on BIM to Sim
8:15: Adjourn

Panelists:
Mitch Dec is an Associate with Glumac and is manager of their energy department, which specializes in energy modeling and energy auditing services for integrating architecture & engineering design decisions, while providing economic analysis for owners. Mitch has presented at Autodesk University and Simbuild, sharing their approach to integrating the use of gbXML code for improving speed with developing energy models for both new construction and renovation projects. The use of gbXML has included the use of Revit, Photo Scene Editor, laser scanning, and energy simulation engines (eQUEST, EnergyPro, EnergyPlus, Ecotect, etc).
Kyle Konis, Ph.D, AIA is an assistant professor of Architecture at USC. His dissertation focused on leveraging occupant feedback data for evaluating and improving the design and performance of low-energy commercial buildings and he also worked with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Windows and Daylighting Group on high performance facade research.  Kyle's simulation expertise is in daylighting simulation with Radiance, R-scripting, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging and he serves on the IESNA Daylighting Metrics Committee.
Jeff Landreth, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C, O+M, is an energy consultant, mechanical engineer, instructor and speaker with a highly technical yet broad background on building performance simulation and systems analysis.  Early in his career, Jeff was responsible for developing complex BIM models for various projects and early testing of gbxml import/exporting through various software platforms including AutoCAD MEP, Revit, IES-VE, Trace700, eQuest.  More recently, Jeff has been focused on developing energy optimization workflows using various combinations of production software, visual programming and energy analysis tools such as Rhino-Grasshopper-Ecotect, Rhino-Grasshopper-DIVA-Radiance/EnergyPlus, Revit-Dynamo-Vasari and with interfaces to MS Excel and Matlab-Simulink.
Leo Salcé, Intl Assoc AIA, LEED AP, is a Senior Consultant with Microdesk.  He specializes in Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology Implementation for architecture and engineering firms both nationally and internationally and focuses on integrating new methodologies and techniques into their workflow to better leverage existing and emerging technology. Leo is a designer with over 10 years of experience in building design, BIM/CAD management and construction documentation production. He holds a degree in Architecture and Computer Science from Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic, where he is also a Registered Architect.  He is an active educator, speaker and published writer on BIM and sustainable design techniques.
