Description

The I2SL Emerald City Chapter Invites You To:

Fred Hutch: You Saw Our Best, Now See How We Reduced Energy Consumption by 30% in the Rest

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is an organization with world-class scientists, including three Nobel Laureates, who have revolutionized prevention, detection and treatment for several cancers and other diseases. Their scientists study the disease process from every angle – from the most basic, molecular and cellular level to a broad, population-based approach – to uncover the factors that influence a person’s likelihood of getting cancer, and using this knowledge to reduce risk and save lives. They perform all of this work on their campus located at the SE corner of Lake Union.

In March of 2015, the I2SL Emerald City Chapter toured Fred Hutch's newest laboratory building at 1100 Eastlake Ave East. This building includes 188,000 square feet of conditioned space boasting a building Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 100.8 kBtu/sf-year. This building represents the flagship building for energy usage on the Fred Hutch campus. But what about the other buildings? They have invited us to come see for ourselves!

Fred Hutch has completed over 200 energy conservation projects which add up to current annual energy savings of $2,000,000/yr. This tour will highlight the best of these projects. We will see the following:

  • A virtual tour of the campus via the Building Automation System (BAS)
  • Main boiler room
  • An example of a building interstitial space
  • Their water conservation reuse project
  • A freezer farm

Our tour guides will be Bob Cowan, Todd Coburn, and Seth Thornton.
