By ArtPrize Education Days

Date and time

Thursday, October 2, 2014 · 12 - 1pm EDT

Location

Grand Rapids Art Museum

101 Monroe Center NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Description

In this hands-on activity, students will create miniature portraits inspired by Salvador Jimenez-Flores’ installation, I Am Not Who You Think I Am/No soy quien crees que soy. Focusing on identity and self expression, students will create 3D “pop-up” portraits inspired by Jimenez’s ceramic masks. Select student artwork will be displayed in an exhibition at the Grand Rapids Art Museum after ArtPrize.

This activity will introduce students to self-portraiture, 2D verses 3D art, and mixed media. Students will develop skills in drawing, collage and self-expression.

Before attending the program, ask your students the following questions:

  1. What makes you “you?”
  2. What is the purpose of a self-portrait?
  3. What are your favorite activities, memories, places and things? How could you include these in a work of art?
