HVGA Outing: Vassar Arboretum & Poughkeepsie Farm Project
Date: Saturday, July 27th
Time: 10am - 2pm
Location: Vassar College, South parking lot across from Skinner Greenhouse, Poughkeepsie, NY
HVGA’s next outing explores two equally compelling, but quite different, resources growing at Vassar College - Vassar Arboretum and Poughkeepsie Farm Project.
First, Jeff Horst, Director of Operations, will guide us on a landscape tour of the campus. More than 230 species of trees now comprise the vast arboretum of the Vassar campus which began with the first plantings laid out by Matthew Vassar in 1865. Formally established with a gift from the Class of 1875, the arboretum today reflects the subsequent work of devoted Vassar horticulturists. Tour includes the Shakespeare Garden, planted in 1916 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. The garden includes many of the plants mentioned in his works.
Next we head to Poughkeepsie Farm Project, located at Vassar Farm & Ecological Preserve on the south side of campus where Assistant Farm Manager (and HVGA educator extraordinaire!), Jesica Clark, will take us through the various fields and gardens, highlighting the methods that are used to grow crops for CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares, as well as our smaller garden spaces including meditation herb garden and educational seed-saving garden.
Poughkeepsie Farm Project is a non-profit organization that works toward a just and sustainable food system in the Mid-Hudson Valley by operating a member-supported farm, providing education about food and farming, and improving access to healthy locally-grown food.
Tour begins at Vassar campus South Parking lot across from Skinner Greenhouse at 10am. Landscape tour will last approximately 2 hours. We will then drive to Poughkeepsie Farm Project to begin farm tour at 1pm. Please feel free to bring lunch or a snack to eat between tours.
Must pre-register. For more information email email@example.com.
