Come exercise and groove with the ultimate dance partner: a Hula Hoop! This workshop will explore multiple elements of hoop dance, mostly focusing on using the beat of the music to let loose and get your body moving. I will introduce the fundamental concepts, such as waist hooping, hand hooping, and the “vortex”, and how to use the music and rhythm to connect each of these tricks and get your heart rate pumping. I will also introduce fun ways to “pick up” the hoop. This workshop is open to hoopers of all experience levels workshop will end with an open jam where you can practice all the moves you learned, and get an opportunity to freestyle with the music. All hoops will be provided to borrow, with the option of purchasing one after the workshop. I also encourage you to bring your own hoop if you have one. The
About the instructor:
Emily picked up her first hoop at a Furthur show during summer 2012, and hasn’t been able to put it down since. This plastic sacred circle has brought her many joys, and has been an outlet for creativity and movement, and a perfect fusion of yoga and dance. In addition, it has offered Emily another way to connect to live music. Her days are spent spinning and twirling under the sunshine, and teaching others the wonders and fun of hula hooping. Emily is also experienced with double hooping and fire hooping. Emily is also a certified hoop vinyasa yoga teacher. When Emily is not hooping, you can find her trying to save the planet, one environmental cause at a time.
