Fairtrade helps farmers and their families in the developing world by providing a better deal for their produce. Learn how the links in Fairtrade's ethical supply chain benefit us, our planet & the people who grow the food we can't.
Harriet Lamb is the author of “Fighting the Banana Wars,” in which she tells the story of her battle to make sure the food on our plates and the shirts on our backs don’t rob people in other countries of the means to feed or clothe themselves.
Harriet became convinced of the importance of Fairtrade while visiting Costa Rica with WDM in 1997. She had come to investigate local banana plantations’ use of pesticides already banned in the US for making farm-workers sterile. There she met a woman called Maria, whose husband had been exposed to DBCP while working on the plantations. The couple had had a baby boy born with severe developmental abnormalities who died after a short and distressful life.
In her book, Harriet describes how, “As we sat there and she showed me pictures of her baby rage bubbled up inside me because the companies knew of the dangers of this chemical but they ignored them. I have never, ever forgotten Maria.”
Meet Harriet in person, listen to her story and find out how we're applying what she's learnt in New Zealand and the South Pacific.
When & Where
All Good Bananas
All Good is all about healthy eating with a healthy conscience.
Founded on the principle that food that’s good for you should taste good and be good for the people who grow it, Chris Morrison, Matthew Morrison and Simon Coley started All Good Organics to find and promote great tasting ethical and organic food from New Zealand, The Pacific and all over the world.
We’ve been bringing organic bananas to New Zealand from Ecuador and Samoa since 2009 and searching for other ethical suppliers so we can all enjoy a fair banana.
