TOM HALL

Recipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Science & Technology Award"

The Science Museum of Long Island recently named Tom Hall as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARD.  Tom will be honored on Wednesday, February 6th at the Westbury Manor for his outstanding contributions toward the advancement and education of science and technology.

Please help support Tom in his goal to raise a minimum of $1,000 for this important fundraiser.

Proceeds support the Science Museum of Long Island's programs and services for the children and families of the region!

A summary of Tom Hall's impressive list of accomplishments:

After graduating from Queens College, CUNY with a BA in Biology, Tom began his teaching career at the science museum in 1993. It was during this time that he went on his first Museum expedition as an Entomology Science Specialist on a trip to the Peruvian Amazon.

With the experience he gained working at the museum, he landed his first science department position at IS 93 Ridgewood Queens.  After 3 years, which included a trip to Easter Island as a support diver on an Explorers club flagged mission, he moved to Westchester and began working at Westlake Middle and High School in Thornwood, NY. At this point he also earned my MS.Ed. from Queens College with a concentration in geology.

In 2003 his district added a week to his winter vacation for another SMLI trip; this one to Patagonia, Argentina. He worked with his colleagues at home on a web page/blog (new at the time) in which he communicated with his students via the internet and was involved in a daily Q&A session with them. He has been involved in collaborative education for 12 years and is an active practitioner and proponent of Problem Based Learning and Education for Sustainability.

The last 13 years have included a stint as department chair, a few years presenting at the National Association for Gifted Children national conference (Guided Research Through the internet), and trips  with students to  Key Largo, Florida for reef ecology  studies.  This is also his eleventh year involved with the Trout in the Classroom, raising and release program.

He is a member of the National Science Teachers Association, a board member and in charge of the forestry program for PCFGA – a sportsman’s club in Putnam County.

The inaugural ADVOCATES FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARDS takes place on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, 6pm to 8pm, at Westbury Manor.  To register or for more information, call Tracey Gittere at (516) 222-0550 or TGittere@LegendaryEvents.net
