RUSSELL AINBINDER

Recipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Science & Technology Award"

The Science Museum of Long Island recently named Russell Ainbinder as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARD.  Russell will be honored on Wednesday, February 6th at the Westbury Manor for his outstanding contributions toward the advancement and education of science and technology.

Please help support Russell in his goal to raise a minimum of $1,000 for this important fundraiser.

Proceeds support the Science Museum of Long Island's programs and services for the children and families of the region!

A summary of Russell Ainbinder's impressive list of accomplishments:

Russell Ainbinder grew up as a child of the technological revolution of the late 60's, 70's, and 80's watching in with wrapped fascination the explosion of technological advancement that was the Apollo missions to the moon. His first opportunity to interact with modern electronics was as a high school student in a BOCES class and an introduction of computers with Commodore VIC 20 and 64 with them as his introduction to programing that he followed to a degree from Suffolk County College in computer information systems, database management, and web design as well as a hobby of building and repairing computers and electronic circuits.

While at Suffolk he took his knowledge of computers and interest in education to teach a number of classes to adults and children at the south manor schools and helped with maintaining their computer systems. He also took the opportunity to offer a class in building model airplanes to young children at a local library and school summer program. While at Suffolk his love of space grew into an avocation in astronomy through the coursework offered at the eastern campus this avocation grew into a hunger to delve deeper into the study of astronomy and at Dowling college he undertook a Major in Earth Sciences and Minor in chemistry.

While at Dowling, Russell offered many viewing opportunities to students and the public, something that he continues to do to this day, now with a number of telescopes that he has obtained with national science foundation grants. At Dowling under the tutelage of his department chairman Dr. John Tanacredi he was introduced to the realm of research first as a field data collector and running a lab to leading a project and designing from the ground up a lab to study horseshoe crabs, training, and overseeing other student researchers and lab personal. Dr. Russell Sidel offered him the opportunity to be part of a chemistry team working with the self-assembly of metallic crystals on an organic backbone. These research programs continued through his Masters degree in secondary education. After receiving his teaching certification in Earth Science he has taught at Sayville and Sachem North High Schools as a long term leave replacements.

At each of these schools he offered opportunities for both the students and community to interact with and study the natural world around them including astronomical viewing, which has continued with his addition to the excellent staff at Manhasset High School, including the addition of engineering opportunities as well as supporting a group of students in forming an engineering club at the school.

To introduce students to the cutting edge of rapid prototyping he has recently acquired with grant money a 3D printer that will be used by middle and high school students to create fixtures for their research projects, art, architectural, and technology project models.

The inaugural ADVOCATES FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARDS takes place on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, 6pm to 8pm, at Westbury Manor.  To register or for more information, call Tracey Gittere at (516) 222-0550 or TGittere@LegendaryEvents.net
