ROBERT ALVEY

Recipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Science & Technology Award"

The Science Museum of Long Island recently named Robert Alvey as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARD.  Rob will be honored on Wednesday, February 6th at the Westbury Manor for his outstanding contributions toward the advancement and education of science and technology.

Proceeds support the Science Museum of Long Island's programs and services for the children and families of the region!

A summary of Rob Alvey's impressive list of accomplishments:

Rob Alvey has nearly 40 years experience as a scientist, concentrating in geology and earth science. He has been a consistent advocate for the advancement and education of science and technology throughout his career.  He is currently the senior geologist for EPA’s Superfund Division and is responsible for hydrogeologic investigations at toxic and hazardous waste sites for the protection of human health and the environment .

In 2011, Rob completed a detail as Special Assistant to the EPA Regional Administrator, Judith Enck.  Rob is a former co-chair of the EPA's Groundwater Forum, and has received numerous EPA awards for his work, in addition to a letter of commendation from Senator Charles Schumer for his diligence and vision in addressing a significant groundwater plume affecting Nassau’s public water districts. Rob also represents EPA on the Long Island Groundwater Research Institute’s Advisory Committee through Stony Brook University and works closely with science research efforts through an Interagency Agreement with the US Geological Survey.

In addition, Rob has over 10 years teaching geology and earth sciences at York College and Kingsborough Community College and where he is an Adjunct Professor.  He received a grant in 2010 from York and participated in a paleontology research program in Montana, recovering a large number of dinosaur fossils.  He has an “outstanding” reputation on www.ratemyprofessors.com .

Rob also is the founder and President emeritus of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary, an innovative and award winning program for the “dual use” of a 9- acre Nassau County storm water basin in Garden City that has been transformed through thousands of hours of volunteer community service into a bird sanctuary, arboretum and most importantly an environmental center for educational purposes.
