DR. MERRYL KAFKA

Recipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Science & Technology Award"

The Science Museum of Long Island recently named Dr. Merryl Kafka as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AWARD.  Dr. Kafka will be honored on Wednesday, February 6th at the Westbury Manor for her outstanding contributions toward the advancement and education of science and technology.

Proceeds support the Science Museum of Long Island's programs and services for the children and families of the region!

Dr. Merryl Kafka: Independent Marine Science Educator

In her capacity as Curator of Education (and a 30-year career history from which she retired) at the New York Aquarium, Dr. Kafka has been instrumental in providing exciting marine science programming to families, community groups, school children, and teachers throughout the New York City area.  Her lifelong efforts, along with a creative and dedicated staff*, produced a responsive and award-winning Aquarium Education Department, as well as co-founding the Rachel Carson HS of Coastal Studies in Coney Island.

Dr. Kafka is the recipient of many awards; from the White House and the Environmental Protection Agency on “Project Creek”, an environmental partnership award on habitat restoration in Coney Island, and Project P.O.W.E.R . (Protecting Our Wetlands with Educators and Regulators), to recently receiving the “Lifelong Devotion to Marine Education Exemplary Service Award” from the New York State Marine Education Association (NYSMEA), where she has been an active board and conference committee member for over 30 years. Merryl is currently an adjunct professor at Brooklyn College’s AREAC (Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center), co-teaching “Urban Marine Ecology” for the College Now program, as well as “marinating” young children in marine science in after-school programs at Bank Street College. When not teaching on land, Merryl may also be found on the waterways as a naturalist onboard the American Princess, docked at Breezy Point, and most recently as a guest lecturer onboard the Holland America Lines. During her semi-retirement snowbird existence in Florida, she is a volunteer program developer for a community nature club and a new docent at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton.  In her lifelong devotion to science education, Merryl will continue to ensure that our coastal treasures remain appreciated, understood, and protected for all generations to enjoy.

Remember…. Coastlines are our lifelines.

Dr. Kafka received her M.S. Degree in Biology and N.Y. State Certificate of Museum

Studies from New York University, and received her Doctorate in Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University.

* Great accomplishments are seldom achieved solo. I am grateful to have worked with an incredible team of co-workers at the NY Aquarium: Ellie Fries, Lisa Mielke, Bob Cummings, Melissa Carp, and Maria Zampella.
