Event Details

As the population of senior citizens in the U.S. grows, the demand for home service workers continues to increase. To save money and retain independence, more U.S. seniors are opting to remain at home as they age. There is an increasing need for home service workers to assist with the tasks and chores of everyday living.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for home health and personal care aides (home service workers) will increase by 70% with the addition of 1.3 million new jobs by 2020.

Continuing Professional Development is offering the perfect opportunity to gain the basic skills needed to begin a new career, enhance your professional resume or to confidently provide companionship or care for a family member or friend who is elderly or has a disability. These skills include:

- Person-centered communication techniques

- Basic hygiene and infection control

- Assistance with personal care tasks

- Housekeeping, cooking and nutrition

- Use of adaptive equipment such as lifts, wheelchairs, walkers and grab bars

- Recognizing and responding to an emergency

- Understanding legal requirements and limitations

- HeartSaver CPR and awareness of blood borne pathogens

This course exceeds the home service worker training requirements of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Classes will include hands-on practice and skills will be assessed by a competency evaluation. Upon completion, students will receive a vocational certificate and an American Heart Association CPR card good for two years.

A text book and a materials kit are required and are available in the CLC bookstore. Students will be required to pass a criminal background check and meet health requirements prior to the first day of class. There are additional fees for these services. Call (847)543-2615 for registration information.
