Tenor Saxophonist, and 2003 NEA Jazz Masters Awardee, Jimmy Heath, is a superlative musician of longstanding accomplishment, and a talented big band leader, composer, and music arranger.
Affectionately called "Little Bird" because of the similarity in his playing to Charlie Parker, Heath switched from alto saxophone to playing tenor in the early '50s. During the late 50’s, Heath, wrote for Chet Baker and Art Blakey, and worked with Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, and Gil Evans; as well as producing a string of impressive recordings for Riverside Records. In the 1960s, Heath requently played with Milt Jackson and Art Farmer, and between 1975-1982, he teamed up with his brothers, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath in the "Heath Brothers”.
Since then, he has remained active as an educator (Professor of Music at Queens College Aaron Copeland School of Music), saxophonist, performer, mentor, and writer.
The Jimmy Heath Quintet also includes: Jeb Patton (Piano), David Wong (Bass), Gregory Hutchinson (Drums), Freddie Hendrix (Trumpet)
