Event Details

The Hk Maker Lab is an intense six-week summer program held at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University to learn the foundations of engineering design. The program is open to NYC students from regions underrepresented in STEM opportunities (i.e. Title I schools, or if the student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch). Twenty-five top students were selected based on merit.

Focusing on addressing a global health challenge, students are prototyping a biomedical device and developing a business plan under the direction of Prof. Aaron Kyle. The program will culminate in a presentation to executives from the biomedical community in a pitch event. Winning projects may be further incubated using the state-of-the-art facilities at Harlem Biospace.

Harlem Biospace

Harlem Biospace (Hb) is a biotech incubator launched in 2013, the first of its kind in New York City, to offer affordable shared wet-lab space for early-stage biotech companies. It offers a beautiful wet lab outfitted with modern biotech equipment, exciting classes and events, and business support – creating a community to turn ideas into inventions that solve real health problems. Harlem Biospace is situated at the heart of three academic campuses (Columbia University, City College of New York, and Columbia’s Manhattanville campus), with easy access to other major universities, the life science community, and the vibrancy of New York City.
