Historic Places - Leaders of Built Environment Stewardship: Responsible Rehabilitation

Doors open at 5:30pm, presentation from 6:00-7:00pm

A significant positive environmental impact over the next generation will come from the rehabilitation of existing buildings. And it is during the next generation that the significant reduction in carbon emissions is needed. This workshop takes the approach that by understanding how heritage conservation approaches heritage buildings, we can become better stewards of existing buildings. In British Columbia, policy and legislation is adapting to stimulate this. Over the last five years statutory amendments and policy have emerged BC  at the forefront of the heritage conservation and environmental sustainability field. This workshop introduces these amendments and the potential they offer in facilitating the stewardship of our existing built environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Grasp how a heritage conservation approach has relevance to and demonstrates responsible existing building stewardship.
  • Understand what special provisions exist in law to facilitate the environmentally and socially responsible rehabilitation of heritage and existing buildings.
  • Grasp that, in terms of their building science, traditionally-constructed buildings behave differently from their modern counterparts.
  • Understand practical approaches to assessing and upgrading existing traditionally-constructed building fabric.

Applicable for 1 GBCI CEU, AIBC
