ABSTRACT:

Dr. Syed Ahmed will talk about the application of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Technology in Power Systems.  A lot of R & D work has been completed in HTS and it is now making way into real-time application products such as MRI, Fault Current Limiters, Transformers, Underground Cables, Motors, Generators, Synchronous Condensers, and Reactive Power Compensators among other uses.

The HTS field is exciting and Dr. Ahmed will be covering the status of research and demonstration projects at Southern California Edison, and other national electric utilities, under the sponsorship of U.S. Department of Energy  He will also cover some of the international contributions and projects which were completed successfully.


BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Syed Ahmed has over 39 years of experience in power system engineering experience spanning diesel, hydro-electric, and natural gas generation stations. His work has taken him around the globe including projects in Pakistan, Nigeria, and the United States.  Syed joined Southern California Edison in 1991. Initially working in Engineering and Construction to modernize the Ormond Beach, Redondo Beach and Huntington Beach Generation Stations, he has since moved into SCE’s R&D department. Since 1996, Syed has been heavily involved with SCE’s High Temperature Superconductor technology development.


Syed received his PhD in 1990 and MSEE in 1986 from UC Irvine in Power Engineering. He received an MBA with a specialization in Finance from UC Riverside in 1982. His professional interests include Power Systems engineering and research, Operations Research, and Control Systems. Syed holds an Adjunct Professor psotion at the UC Irvine School of Engineering where he has taught Power Systems Anaysis and Design and Energy Conversion since 1985. He also teaches power system engineering at the USC Vitterbi School of Engineering.
