Important: Please only register for a ticket if you can absolutely make it as tour capacity is highly limited.
Note: We'll need a full name for each person attending the tour and your country of citizenship for security. No exceptions! (Eventbrite will request this on the ticket page).
At the very first Nerd Nite East Bay, we featured a talk on smarter electrochromic windows by Memo Garcia from the Molecular Foundry. We've decide to take a peek at the facility he RAVED about.
The Molecular Foundry is a department of energy (DOE) nano-scale research user facility. In normal human words, that means a group of scientists both doing research in nano-materials (think nano-bots, but with less bot in general), and supporting a wide range of users. These users come in from the outside world to benefit from our expertise and instrumentation in all things nano. People don't have to pay anything to use the facility, they just have to convince a team of reviewers that their work is better than most of the other people who apply.
We'll spend a couple hours delving into the nano world with our fearless scientist host, Adam Schwartzberg. The Molecular Foundry covers a wide range of the physical sciences, and in this tour Adam will do his best to convey what is done there, and how they do it.
More detail on The Molecular Foundry can be found here: http://foundry.lbl.gov
Please bring your ID! After the tour, we'll be heading down the hill to a local Berkeley bar.
Adam Schwartzberg is a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, and The Molecular Foundry. His background is in laser spectroscopy, imaging, and synthesis of nano materials. Adam did his graduate work at UC Santa Cruz, then postdocs at UC Berkeley and The Molecular Foundry. He now works in measuring how electrons move in materials at very short time scales (femtoseconds!... 1e-15 seconds) and depositing thin films in new ways of new materials. He hopes to save the world, and also gives excellent tours.
When you arrive at the security gate, they will have badges for you. Mention that you are there for the Molecular Foundry tour. They will direct you to Building 67.
When & Where
Nerd Nite Field Trips
Every month, Nerd Nite Field Trips hosts an outing related to one of the talks you hear at Nerd Nite. Experiences will range from tours, hikes, adventures, hands-on workshops - basically anything that extends the learning from the incredible NN East Bay and SF talks.
