Heels for Words began as a class project led by the OSU-Tulsa Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate class of 2013. Now in its third year, the primary goal of the Heels for Words project is to raise awareness of aphasia.
Aphasia is an impairment of language that limits a person’s ability to understand, speak, read and write. It occurs as a result of brain injury, such as stroke, head trauma, brain tumors, or infections. While aphasia can steal words, it does not affect intelligence or competence.
This year’s fundraiser will support Cowboy Aphasia Camp at OSU-Tulsa which offers a treatment experience for people with aphasia. We hope to build a bridge between those with aphasia and the community in which they live. We believe that this can lead to more meaningful lives for both those challenged by aphasia and members of the community.
Participants may choose between two trails: ½ mile, and 1.5 miles. High heeled shoes are encouraged, but not mandatory, for both women and men. Participants opting to complete the 1.5 mile trail in high heels will be eligible for a prize drawing following the walk. Snacks and water will be provided. Canine walkers are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.
