Doors 9pm / Pre-show with Mr. Moonshine 10:00pm / Film 11:00pm
One night after we resurrect The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Orange County, The Frida Cinema presents John Cameron Mitchell's blistering 2001 musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch - with special guests, Mr. Moonshine!
A surprisingly insightful examination of identity, sexuality, and love - all set to an award-winning soundtrack seamlessly mixing punk rock, cabaret, glam rock, and country twang - Hedwig and the Angry inch is writer-director John Cameron Mitchell's big-screen adaptation of his off-Broadway (and now ON Broadway) musical of the same name, written in collaboration with musician and lyricist Stephen Trask. Mitchell plays Hedwig, a long-suffering - but tough as nails - East German transgender singer obsessed with the 70's music of his youth, and determined achieve Rock Icon status. Together with his band The Angry Inch (a moniker with a tragic origin) and dedicated band-mate Yitzhak, Hedwig employs the styles of his inspiration to tell the tale, in song, of his childhood in East Germany as young boy Hans, his transformation to Hedwig as a means to leave East Germany, his fate as a heartbroken divorcee living in a Kansas trailer park, his encounter and eventual creative collaboration with Christian teenager Tommy, and their eventual tumultuous relationship. Eschewing the pomp and scale of the traditional film musical for intimacy, punk rock minimalism, and glam whimsy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch clips along at a quick 95-minute running time, and manages in that quick time to deliver a tale brimming with poignancy, humor, emotion, revelation - and one of the greatest rock-musical soundtracks of all time.
Joining us for this special screening is Santa Ana and Long Beach-based band Mr. Moonshine! Fresh from several successful performances of their recently curated tribute to Hedwig and the Angry Inch - featuring several songs from the soundtrack - Mr. Moonshine will be performing their show at The Frida starting at 10pm to kick off our 11pm screening!
"Hedwig makes for an unforgettable heroine, the perfect center to this wonderfully odd, vivid and dynamic movie." - Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald
"For all its serious subtext, the movingly affirmative Hedwig is raucous, racy and full of hilarious, lowdown survivor's wit." - Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch occupies an almost extinct movie category: It's an original rock musical--indeed, according to its maker, a "post-punk neo-glam rock musical," a category almost as specialized as the not dissimilar "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," which was a "camp rock horror musical." ...Strange, how the movie seems to be loud, flashy and superficial, and yet gives a deeper dimension to its characters." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
