  • The commissioning of clinical staff from these partner institutions:
    • Hospital for Special Surgery: Chaplains Margo Heda and Margaret Tuttle
    • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: Chaplains Laurie Anderson and Elizabeth Baine
    • New York Hospital Queens: Chaplain Elaine Chan
  • The recognition of three staff members who have reached milestone service anniversaries.
  • The awarding of the Pioneer Medal for Outstanding Leadership to Susan D. Block, M.D., who will deliver the keynote address “Learning from Dying: What My Patients Have Taught Me about Religion and Spirituality.”

Dr. Block is chair of the Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care at Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's Hospital, co-director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care, and professor of psychiatry and medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Throughout her career, Dr. Block has had a strong interest in improving the care of patients with life-threatening illness and in humanism in medicine, where relationships between physicians and their patients are respectful and compassionate. She served as the assistant director of the New Pathway at Harvard Medical School, leading its curriculum reform effort focused on integrating humanism and social science into the medical school curriculum.  She has been a leader in the development of the field of palliative medicine and has developed innovative, nationally-recognized, educational programs for medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
