Haute and Handmade: A Showcase of Southern Contemporary Couture
A runway show featuring Alambama Chanin and six local designers;
a workshop with Alabama Chanin the next day

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art presents on Fri. Dec. 9 “Haute and Handmade: A Showcase of Southern Contemporary Couture,” a runway fashion show featuring Alabama Chanin and designers from New Orleans whose work combines Southern textile craft with cutting-edge fashion. Local designers include: Amanda Deleon, Kerry Fitts, Grayson Gold, Lorna Leedy, Andrea Loest and Rebecca Rebouche.

The show will be centered around the work of Alabama Chanin. Natalie Chanin created Alabama Chanin, a community revitalization project that combines American craft with inventive fashion. Alabama Chanin is a lifestyle company that creates fashion and designed objects using a model of slow design with a focus on sustainability, fabricating unique garments from a combination of new, organic, and recycled materials. The company is remarkable in that it has created its own slow economic model, an innovation that supports the talented artisans who live and work in and around Florence, Alabama, who hand-stitch the garments and products.

New Orleans artists and fashion designers featured in the show are interested in how new and innovative concepts of the garment inform their work and design. How ideas of hand made, slow process, and architectural approaches are present in fashion made locally. The artists’ and designers’ unique interpretations of these concepts will be showcased in special clothing collections created exclusively for this event. Paris Parker/Aveda Spas and Salons will do the hair and makeup for the runway show.

On Sat. Dec. 10, Alabama Chanin will have a two-hour workshop that is suited to beginners and experienced alike. Work with Natalie Chanin and the Alabama Chanin DIY Kits to create a project from its Alabama Stitch Book and Alabama Studio Style—the Rose + Lace T-shirt; bandana; or journal cover. DIY Kits is included in workshop fee. Spaces are limited, and reservations are required. (REGISTER DIRECTLY WITH ALABAMA CHANIN.)

Presented by the Kohlmeyer Circle, the Museum's young patron membership.
