About the Conference

Academic rigor requires intellectual diversity. In recent years numerous books, studies, surveys, and articles have addressed perceived ideological imbalances – from both the left and right – found in the humanities and social sciences. Our conference will focus on these perceived politicization of higher education, and also how the academic environment helps each side better understand the other. Keynote speakers and panelists from Princeton University, New York University, University of British Columbia, Ohio State University, Youngstown State University, Penn State – Harrisburg, Houston Baptist University, St. John College – Annapolis, Hillsdale College, Aquinas College, The Imaginative Conservative, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Grand Valley State University will explore how the academy can overcome ideological divides from within.

Background

This past year the Hauenstein Center has been developing civic leadership through its Common Ground Initiative, which is an exploration and redefinition of what it means to be conservative and what it means to be progressive in the U.S. today. We have hosted a number of stellar researchers and received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to bring to our campus a number of scholars to investigate the first principles of these two traditions and explore the possible common ground that conservatives and progressives might share, not only politically and historically, but also culturally and within higher education.

Organizer

The Hauenstein Center at Grand Valley State University

Inspired by Ralph Hauenstein, we seek to provide a platform for emerging leaders in all three major sectors of public life – business, government, and nonprofit.  We promote civic engagement that (1) honors the Founders’ vision of a constitutional republic; (2) builds on existing democratic institutions that promote justice, freedom, opportunity, sustainable prosperity, and the rule of law; and (3) envisions the possibilities for creating better communities.
