Event Details

Hamlet on Alcatraz has been full to capacity since October 4th.
Names are taken for our waiting list 1 hour prior to listed performance start time.

Please follow the signs to the Hamlet on Alcatraz reservations table at Pier 33 and add your name to the waiting list on the performance date of your choice.
Unclaimed reservations will be released to the waiting list 15 minutes before ferry departure.

We have given waiting list pre-placement priority to folks who had reservations to shows that were canceled due to inclement weather back in October.  As a result, our waiting lists for the final three performances of Hamlet on Alcatraz (Friday @ 3:10, Saturday @ 3:10, and Sunday @ 11:35) already have approximately 15 names at the top of each list.  There's still a chance you will get in if you arrive 1 hour early, but we want to prepare people for worse odds than we've had on past weekends.

To receive advanced notice for future We Players events, please join our mailing list.

Rain Plan

Hamlet on Alcatraz will be performed in mild to moderate rain. If there is a torrential downpour that does not seem to be letting up, we will cancel the performance and email attendees with as much advance notice as possible. Please check your email if it is raining on the day you are scheduled to attend. In the event of a cancellation, we will also post a sign at Pier 33 and/or change the voice mail greeting at 415.547.0189.

**************

In programmatic partnership with the National Park Service, 2009-2011, We Players is creating site-specific theater events on Alcatraz Island.  Using classical plays, contemporary writings, and a variety of performing and visual arts, these We Players programs and events will stimulate awareness and conversation around the Alcatraz themes of incarceration, isolation, justice and redemption.

We Players’ production of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, directed by Ava Roy, will fully inhabit The Rock. Scenes are staged throughout the island - utilizing natural features and historic structures, and our designated audience will travel between scenes. The narrative path extends approximately 1.5 miles across Alcatraz and the performance journey will be a full 4 hours from ferry departure to mainland return.  We Players’ designated audiences will have unprecedented opportunities to enter parts of the island regularly closed to visitors. In addition, the park’s regular visitors will encounter performance environments throughout the island that will enhance their experience of the space and its history and provoke contemplation of project themes.

While Hamlet on Alcatraz is offered free of charge, tremendous effort and resources have been invested in the creation of this production.  Our invited donation for Hamlet on Alcatraz is $60-80. Your support is very much appreciated!  All donations will be used for material and supply costs and compensation for the many volunteers who have created this event.

For the past 10 years, We Players’ large-scale theater works have been produced without major funding.  With your support, We Players can continue stimulating collaborators and audiences to consider the intricacies of their environment and raising awareness of our Bay Area performance sites and their associated environmental, social, and political issues.

::ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION::

We Players and the National Park Service are committed to providing an experience accessible to all people.  In order to do so, we need you to request assistance as necessary upon reservation. We Players' style of traveling theater offers each audience member a unique vantage point and encourages distinctive experiences.

Much of Alcatraz is steep and hilly, so be prepared for walking long distances uphill. The distance from the dock to the prison at the top of the island is about 1/4 mile (.4 km) and the elevation change is 130 feet (40 meters). This is equivalent to climbing a thirteen story building. We Players audience will walk from scene to scene and there will be minimal opportunity to sit down during the performance journey.  The narrative path of Hamlet extends approximately 1.5 miles back and forth and up and down across Alcatraz and will take a little over 3 hours.  If you are physically incapable of walking the route, please reserve a space on the tram for one of the selected performances; if you do not reserve a space, you will not be guaranteed a seat.

A tram will be available to We Players dedicated audience on the following performance dates (all are Saturdays): 10/30; 11/6; 11/13; 11/20.  Please note that tram space is extremely limited, and only those with physical need should request these reservations.  Seat or wheelchair space on the tram is requested by selecting the appropriate reservation above.  If the reservation category is marked "Sold Out," the tram is filled; please select one of the other performance dates for which a tram is offered.

American Sign Language Interpreters will be provided on Sunday, 10/17 @ the 11:30am event.  If you will be using this service, please reserve a space for this specific event, and please click the ASL box on your reservation information form so we can ensure the proper number of interpreters.

Docents for audience members with visual and hearing impairment are available upon request, for all performances.  Please please click the appropriate box on your reservation information form.
