"The Truepenny Players’ Hamlet at the Alcove Theatre, 414 Mason St., in association with The Beverly Hills Playhouse, is an extraordinary production, powerful and utterly compelling. The black-box set and intimate scale of the theatre undoubtedly promote the audience’s engagement but it is the acting which dissolves the distance between spectator and action. In this taut production, the plot stripped to intense personal dynamics, each element contributes to the tight focus, including the remarkably apt physical attributes of the casting and edgy yet unfussy costumes. The acting is superb, if one were even aware of it as performance: Terry Kolkey as Polonius, Glenn Havlan as Claudius and Lynn Sotos as Gertrude are particularly honed to the focused interpretation. Jennifer Vo Le’s Ophelia is inspired: tense, brittle rather than fragile, she is a force to be reckoned with. But the dynamo fueling the whole is Tim Gahan’s stunning Hamlet, a coiled spring gradually wound to the pitch. Hamlet’s psychic dilemmas manifest themselves in Gahan’s physiognomy, gesticulations, kicks and capers, riveting the audience who read the torments of the mind in the body. Under Kevin Burke’s exceptional direction the action is compressed into pure energy, coherence emanating from the integration of all the elements, including the brilliant choice of music. This is breath-taking theatre, an experience devoutly to be wished and not to be missed."
