POSTPONED: HACKBRIGHT TECH TALK:
Technical Debt, Legacy Systems & You:
What A Tangled Web We Weave!
- by Duretti Hirpa
Fastly software engineer Duretti Hirpa will be speaking about technical debt at Hackbright Academy on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.
Light appetizers will be served at 6pm, and the tech talk begins at 6:30pm PST.
We will be LIVESTREAMING the tech talk for those who cannot attend in San Francisco - you can sign up to attend the tech talk virtually, or at Hackbright Academy in San Francisco!
About the Talk: Greenfield projects (projects that start from scratch and with no constraints) are rare in the software development cycle. In practice, you'll most likely be working on projects within existing systems, each with its own set of bright spots and pain points.
This talk will focus on describing a particular pain point: technical debt. Simply speaking, technical debt is the trade-off between features that are quickly (but hastily) implemented versus those that are more thought-out. Over time, these quick implementations demand payment, often in the form of time or the extra development effort needed to work around those initial decisions. Ultimately, however, technical debt is a human problem. As such, it inevitably appears in all systems and across most feature-sets.
Additionally, we’ll discuss how to identify, manage, and undo technical debt, as well as how to get one’s bearings in a legacy system. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the tactics used to adjust to a legacy system are similar to those used to address technical debt.
About the Speaker: Duretti Hirpa is a software engineer at Fastly.
