Event Details

Javier Sicilia of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity in Mexico will speak about the growing resistance to the US-led drug war at CRLN's 2013 annual luncheon on Wednesday, November 5, 2013 from 12-2 pm at Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chicago. A one hour question and answer session from 2:30 - 3:30 will follow the luncheon.

In memory of his 24-year-old son, murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico in 2011, poet Javier Sicilia created the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity (MPJD) to end the drug violence that has left an estimated 70,000 people dead and 27,000 disappeared in Mexico over the past 8 years. The MPJD movement organized caravans led by victims of violence, who traveled across Mexico and the U.S. carrying a message of peace and resistance. The caravans called for a bi-national U.S.-Mexico reform of drug policies and addressed the human and financial costs of gun smuggling, money laundering, border militarization and abuse of migrants.

Walter Boyd, formerly the Director of Criminal Justice Initiatives at Protestants for the Common Good, now Executive Director of St. Leonard's Ministries, will be the respondant to Javier Sicilia, illuminating the affects of the drug war on the U.S., specifically Chicago, side of the border.

Mr. Sicilia is currently on tour through the U.S. and Canada with Global Exchange, connecting MPJD’s mission with movements of resistance to racialized mass incarceration and the war on drugs.
