Purpose: We look forward to having you join us for this evening that gently embraces the reality that the capacity to love requires the necessity to mourn. Dr. Alan Wolfelt is one of North America’s leading grief counselors and the author of many best-selling books about healing in grief. This compassionate program will provide you support in your personal grief, and also assist participants who want to learn more about helping a family member or friend that is experiencing grief and loss.

Purpose: This stimulating workshop will help members of the caregiving community who want to enhance their knowledge and skills related to supporting people experiencing grief and loss. Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt will explore a multitude of sub-topics surrounding grief care and emphasize the importance of “companioning” not “treating” the mourner. Participants will go away with a wealth of knowledge as they explore the transformative nature of grief.


Who Should Attend: This workshop will be helpful to anyone who wants to learn more about essential caregiving principles for caring for grieving persons. It will be particularly helpful to counselors, social workers, clergy, chaplains, nurses and lay ministers. If you know someone who would find this helpful encourage them to register!


Objective: Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the essential ingredients of the bereavement caregiver.
  • Define critical semantic distinctions in terminology.
  • Outline the tenets of a “companioning” philosophy of grief care.
  • Define the concepts of “hospitality” and “sanctuary” in context of grief counseling.
  • Identify a core “body of knowledge” of the grief counselor.
  • Define the concept of “reconciliation” versus “resolution” of grief.

CEU Information:


This is an activity offered by Emanuel Medical Center, a CMA accredited provider.  Physicians attending the program may report up to one hour* of Category I credit toward the California Medical Association’s certification in continuing medical education and the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award.


*Actual number of hours which comply with the criteria for a Category I activity. Credit hours are based on hour-for-hour participation excluding meals and breaks


Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 755 for 6 contact hours. Approved for 6 CEH for EMS - Emanuel Medical Center, EMS CEH Provider # 60-0053.  This course meets the requirements for CE for RCPs in California.

About the Presenter:  Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt is a noted author, educator, and grief counselor. Recipient of the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Death Educator Award, he serves as the Director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition, he is a faculty member of the University of Colorado Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine.  A frequent guest of the media, Dr. Wolfelt has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Larry King Show, and the NBC Today Show.


He is the author of over thirty books on grief and loss. Among his titles are Loving From the Outside in, Mourning From the Inside Out; Understanding Your Grief; The Journey Through Grief; Companioning the Bereaved: A Soulful Guide for Caregivers; Healing a Spouse’s Grieving Heart; Companioning the Grieving Child; Healing a Parent’s Grieving Heart; and Creating Meaningful Funeral Ceremonies.


Alan and his wife Sue, a family physician, are parents to three children: Megan, Christopher and Jaimie. They live in the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains next door to the Center for Loss and Life Transition. Dr. Wolfelt facilitates intensive 4-day learning experiences about grief and loss, throughout the year, in Fort Collins, Colorado (
