On 18 and 19 July 2012, in Portland, Oregon, thirty 11-16 year old girls participated in a fantastic two-day greenlight for girls OSCON event leading simulated missions to Mars with LEGO Mindstorm robots. To carry out their missions, the girls had help from ten amazing volunteer role models from the science and technology fields, and they were inspired by several amazing speakers -- from O'Reilly Media, Black Duck Software, New Relic, Stormpath, Friends of the Children - Portland, and NASA -- who convinced them just how fun and enriching careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) really are.
We all had a terrific time and most of all, the girls were inspired to learn and do more with programming, robots and science, and to consider studies and careers in areas they may never have thought of before.
So a big "Mission Accomplished" to the girls who participated in our amazing g4g OSCON event, and huge thanks to our wonderful sponsors and partners who made this fantastic event possible! We look forward to future Greenlight@OSCON Days and other g4g events with the open source community very soon!

In Portland, Oregon on 18 & 19 July 2012, in the context of OSCON 2012 - the largest open source conference in the world - Greenlightforgirls.org will carry out Greenlight@OSCON Days 2012 (“g4gOSCON2012”), a two-day "Girls, Coding & Robots" activity providing forty girls, ages 11-18, the opportunity to design, program and deploy a series of exciting robotic missions that will show them the fun in science and technology.
The main activity for Greenlight@OSCON Days 2012 is the "Greenlight Mission to Mars" where a crack team of Greenlight Mission Control Officers will send rovers into space to carry out ground-breaking reconnaisance missions and geographic and scientific investigations of the Red Planet. But don't worry: No programming or astronautical experience is necessary for this mission. You'll get all the training you need on the job!
g4gOSCON2012 will take place from 10am to 4pm on 18 & 19 July 2012, within the OSCON Exhibitors Hall at the Oregon Convention Center. Registration Fee for attendees covers meals, snacks, educational materials, a special gift and administration costs per girl. If you would like to apply for a scholarship for the event, please contact us!
g4gOSCON2012 will be led by Cheryl Miller, Technology Chair for the greenlight for girls foundation (“g4g”) and Tasha Carl, Founder of ICT2ACT and g4g Robotics Community Leader. The event will be supported on the ground by young g4g volunteer assistants and volunteer female role model professionals from the field.
