Great Locomotive Tour, April 14, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Trace the route of the Great Locomotive Chase as it passed through the Dalton-Whitfield County area. The bus tour will begin in the south of the county, where The General was forced to cut short its resupply efforts as the pursuing locomotive Texas approached. The tour will then make its way north, passing through the oldest tunnel in the region at that time; Tunnel Hill. The day will be complete with meals, exploration, and narration from our on-site historian.

Itinerary:

  • Freight Depot - Dalton, GA

8:00 a.m.   Continental breakfast; Meet the Historian

8:30 a.m.   Depart for Silver Shoe Ranch

  • Silver Shoe Ranch and Wildlife Preserve - Tilton, GA

The location of Green’s Wood Station, where The General was forced to cut short its resupply efforts as the pursuing locomotive Texas approached.  This sealed the fate of Andrews’ Raiders.

  • Dalton’s Western & Atlantic Depot (The Dalton Depot Restaurant) - Dalton, GA

Where The Texas dropped off 17-year-old telegrapher Edward Henderson with instructions to alert Confederate forces in Chattanooga.

  • The Western and Atlantic Tunnel - Tunnel Hill, GA

The 1,477 foot tunnel where Andrews' Raiders began to lose steam. Also the location of the Clisby Austin house, where Gen. William Sherman headquartered at the beginning of his 1864 Atlanta Campaign.
