January's book is Good Strategy, Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why it Matters, by Richard Rumelt. It's the perfect book to review at the start of the year to help you define and align your strategy.
Here's the basic premise of the book:
- "Here is the formula. Have a good strategy. Then, execute very well on that strategy. Get either one wrong, and you will go off track. Do them both well, and your chances of succeeding will greatly increase. And what is "succeeding?” It is living up to your intentions. And that requires that your intentions be clear, understandable, adopted throughout the organization, and "bought into" by all the folks. And when that happens, then you focus on turning that set of intentions -- that "strategy" -- into reality.
Doors open at 11:45. Review starts at noon. Be finished by 12:45. Feel free to keep the discussion going until 1:15.
See you then. Spread the word.
