Tucson Symphony Orchestra contrabassoonist, Jessica Campbell, leads the charge for this concert with a selection of new and old pieces for contrabassoon and bassoon. Always wondered what that gigantic wooden instrument lurking behind the oboes might be? Here's the chance to hear not just one but TWO contrabassoons, up close and personal! Joined by fellow contrabassoonist Rebecca Hagen Watson, bassoonist Daniel Hursey, and a goldfish named Harry, this crew will tackle works by jazz legend Dave Brubeck, local phenom composer Chris Black, English wonder Arnold Jacob, and the sublime Johann Sebastian Bach (to name a few). With texts by such great authors as Edward Lear, perhaps a little Poe, and maybe even a bit of Shakespeare, all delivered in the inimitable voice of Chris Black. Don't miss your chance to have your socks vibrated off your ankles and your ears blown into a whole new reality.
Tickets are $10 each (students/veterans $8 at the door with ID and/or youthful countenance). Seating is limited!
When & Where
Church of Beethoven Tucson
The Church of Beethoven is a unique performance format, featuring an hour of music drawn from the classical and other repertoire, the spoken word art of poetry, short talks and compositional readings. A Church of Beethoven performance provides both listener and artist an informal stage to enjoy and consider works of music and language arts in an intimate and accessible way. It is a community builder around the arts dedicated to breaking down that "Fourth Wall" of spatial and formality-driven distance between performer and audience.
This unique series was begun in Albuquerque, NM in 2008 by classical cellist, Felix Wurman and imported to Tucson by local bassoonist and chamber musician, Cassandra Bendickson. From the humble beginnings of an old gas station off US Route 66, Felix's vision has grown to include branches in Durham-North Carolina, Oak Park-Illinois, Santa Monica-California, and now Tucson-Arizona.
Church of Beethoven Tucson is housed out of the newly and fabulously renovated Maker House (formerly the Bates Mansion) in downtown Tucson. Enjoy a delicious coffee, tea, or other more potent beverage, and bask in the arts of music, spoken word, and the visual brilliance of Maker House and the local arts scene.
