Event Details

Advances in technology are helping make great strides in diagnosing infections and making vaccines. Join IF University and the Technology Association of Louisville Kentucky (TALK) for a fascinating class on viruses. Noted University of Louisville virologist Larry Hunt will discuss important aspects of infectious agents, what makes them unique, how they emerge, and what might be on the horizon for global human health.

Learn the basics of such viruses as the human papillomaviruses, HIV, influenza viruses, and the new MERS coronavirus from the Arabian Peninsula. What should you know about viruses that have been discussed in the media recently, such as the rabies virus from human organ transplants and the "bird" flu (H7N9 virus) from China? What are public misconceptions about vaccines, and how can you learn more accurate information?

Don't miss this rare opportunity to discuss global health issues and the technologies scientists and other experts are using to detect, characterize and treat emerging viruses.

FACILITATOR: Larry Hunt is a virologist at the University of Louisville and regularly teaches and lectures about topics in genetics, immunology, medicine, and public health. He will facilitate this class at the invitation of TALK, a membership and trade association for the technology community in and around Louisville. TALK helps identify and attract technology talent to the city, provides networking and programming opportunities for those working in technology fields, and advocates for technology uses and policies. For more information on TALK, visit www.talklou.com.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The location for this class is to be determined based on class size. Participants will be notified when a site has been selected.
