About Anywhere: Selected Works by Rebeca Méndez
The exhibition includes photographs captured during her travels to Iceland, a place Méndez frequents for its unusual geological and climate phenomena. Three triptychs from her series About to Happen show isolated single still-frames from her 16mm film shoots throughout the island, Dettifoss 001–003, capture an instant of the most powerful waterfall in all Europe. Two photographs from her series Weatherscapes document the iceberg lagoon Jökulsárlón under heavy fog at dawn. Méndez, in her Homeland # 3 series, using her own documentary photography from far-flung places like Patagonia and the Sahara desert, explores the sense of ambivalence of the processing (or exploitation) of nature—while her panoramic images allude to the sublime in nature, they simultaneously reveal their synthetic process of construction.
