Description:

Here it is, an intermediate level glass class where you will learn the art of making an implosion! What is an implosion you ask? It’s the 3D flower or firework you create when you combine careful heat control and abstract 2D drawing with molten glass. Convection, density, and gravity move specific segments of glass in a controlled path through a liquid gather of clear glass. It’s like creating a lightning storm with fire.

Ideally you will have had some exposure to flameworking before taking this class, but if you haven’t that’s okay too. The material will be invaluable to any glassworker-to-be. If you’ve had no experience, coordinate with the instructor and plan to arrive 30 minutes early to class.

The implosion is a medium level technique to learn and an advanced technique to master. As the student gains control over the temperature, they gain an tremendous insight into thermodynamics. Glass welds become stronger, metal welding becomes less abstract, and it becomes easier to understand and predict the behavior of many types of glass with this skill.

Class Goals:

This class is intended for the intermediate-level glass worker, but designed so any person of any skill level can learn something new. Students will come out of class with one or more completed implosions of their own.

Prerequisites:

This class is for the glass worker or the welder who has used glass that wishes to more intuitively understand materials which undergo a thermal transition. You should have some experience with molten glass, but if you don’t, contact the instructor to arrange for an introduction. The start of this class should not be be the first time you are working with glass.

Students must be at least 18 years old.

Materials Provided:

The $15 materials fee covers the cost of materials and wear on the tools. All materials and tools will be provided by the instructor and the Asylum.

What to Bring:

$15 materials fee, payable to the instructor by cash or check and water in a sealable container. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing made of natural materials.

Instructor Biography:

Joanne & Mike Soroka

This class is taught by Joanne and Michael Soroka. Joanne has been melting glass for over a decade and was trained by well known Venetian lamp workers and some of the up and coming American glass rock stars of today. She is unstoppable. Her son, Michael, has several years of experience working with glass and has helped make a working invisible glass submarine.
