Learn the basics of flameworking. The thrill of sticking a rod of glass into an open flame and working with the resulting molten glass is mesmerizing. In this one-night hands-on class we will cover the basics of flameworking. As well as safety, tools and equipment, we will do a lot of melting, stretching and winding of molten glass working in the flame of a torch. Rather than focusing on any particular type of glass item, students will get a taste of the processes for making pendants, beads, small sculpture, and more.
This class is designed so any person of any skill level can learn something new. Students will come out of class with one or more completed glass items of their own.
No previous experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old.
The $15 materials fee covers the cost of materials and wear on the tools. All materials and tools will be provided by the instructor and the Asylum.
What to Bring:
$15 materials fee, payable to the instructor by cash or check and water in a sealable container. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing made of natural materials.
This class is taught by Joanne and Michael Soroka. Joanne has been melting glass for over a decade and was trained by well known Venetian lamp workers and some of the up and coming American glass rock stars of today. She is unstoppable. Her son, Michael, has several years of experience working with glass and has helped make a working invisible glass submarine.
