A.M.P. presents the unique, Southern-bluesy sounds of Gibson Wilbanks with special guests The Get Right Band!
When Carly Gibson and BJ Wilbanks first began collaborating musically during the summer of 2011, it was like milk chocolate meeting peanut butter… a beautiful and tasty combination! Up to that point, they had each been pursuing separate solo singer/songwriter careers, but something truly magical took place when they began writing and performing together.
Carly Gibson gained a lot of attention as a songwriter, singer and guitar player when she was selected to attend the GRAMMY guitar and songwriter camps in Los Angeles, designed to allow talented young artists the opportunity to work, learn and play with the music industry’s top professionals. Now a 2013 graduate from Atlanta Institute of Music’s acclaimed guitar program, Carly is what you would call a triple threat: she not only composes soulful and sophisticated music, she also sings beautifully and plays a mean acoustic guitar. In addition, she has earned a substantial reputation for her skill on electric guitar, having performed for a period of time as a lead guitarist with mentor, Caroline Aiken. Though youthful, Carly sports an old soul; her dedication to her art is readily apparent in her performance.
Calhoun, GA native B.J. Wilbanks creates blues-infused music reminiscent of a bygone era, combining deeply-rooted Delta blues, country, funk, soul, and acoustic Southern rock to create a sound that is familiar, yet uniquely his own. His heartwarming tales of heartache, love, and home combine artfully with an engaging live performance that, in one moment can sit you back in your chair and in the next, rock you right back out of it! Wilbanks crafts his distinctive sound with his acoustic guitar, often accompanied by finger slide or harmonica. His original songs range from break-your-heart romantic to stomp-your-foot grooving, merging back-porch soul rhythm with a gospel vocal overtone and a slanky, steady beat. He’ll often sling his guitar over his lap to play a slide tune that evokes the image of old field working men and chase it with a contrasting tune filled with sweet strumming, gentle singing and smooth picking.
Together as Gibson Wilbanks, these two have been called “Gregg Allman meets Bonnie Raitt.” They have combined their considerable songwriting and musical skills to create the unique and popular Southern bluesy sound that helped them to win the coveted songwriter’s open mic competitions at Eddie’s Attic in December of 2011 and in November of 2013 at Eddie Owen Presents @ Red Clay Theatre. In 2013, close friend and harmonica genius Brad Bauman joined the ranks of the band, rounding out their sound with his tasty, soulful blues licks. Whenever possible they perform as a 5-piece band with bass and percussion. Think Gregg Allman meets Bonnie Raitt meets Michael Hedges meets Norton Buffalo with a dash of Al Green–in short, an entertaining and joyful experience not to be missed!
One of Relix Magazine’s “On The Verge” picks, The Get Right Band is “hip-shaking, earthquaking pure funk fun” (The Alternate Root). Combining catchy, clever songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show promises to make you shake everything you’ve got. From funk to rock n’ roll to reggae, this is a dance party. This is an ass shaking good time.
"The Get Right Band is a three-piece with the musical energy and power of The Police,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle. The Transylvania Times writes that the band “takes the stage with a palpable sense of energy."
The band is built on the musical brotherhood that guitarist/vocalist Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, a powerful and dynamic drummer, the group’s sound has become an unstoppable force. The Get Right Band has been touring the East Coast and the Caribbean heavily since their inception in April 2011. The band has rocked hard and jammed relentlessly every step of the way.
The Get Right Band’s debut CD, Shake, was released in February, 2013. Hittin’ The Note Magazine says the disc is “fun, full of energy and excitement, and should be listened to with the volume turned all the way up.” The rock n’ roll album features stripped down but creatively layered and produced performances of the band’s original tunes. It’s “groove with rock melodies built on funk attitudes,” says The Mountain Xpress. From the seductive blues of “Voodoo Doll” to the dance party vibe of “Chromaticize” to the Caribbean influenced “Touch The Holy,” (inspired by the band’s Caribbean tours) Shake’s “impressive stylistic range manages to all fit within the band’s distinctive image” (WNC Magazine). The Grateful Web writes that the disc is a “tasty mix of hip-swinging selections that leaves the listener thirsty for more.”
The members of The Get Right Band have played with many of the East Coast’s greatest acts, including Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, Woody Wood, Josh Phillips, The Artimus Pyle Band, Scrappy Hamilton (now Truth & Salvage Company), Afromotive, and Royal Trux (Virgin Records), and have shared the stage with national acts such as Galactic, Victor Wooten Band, Mike Dillon Band, Jeff Sipe Trio, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Jeff Coffin’s Mutet, Larry Keel, and Bobby Lee Rodgers.
