Lessons in Social Media from NASA
"Get It Online" Lunch Discussion

Tweets and posts and updates, oh my! Each day, social media professionals turn the same news item into multiple updates tailored to the formats of each platform and for each respective audience. What works in one place does not work in another. Jason Townsend, NASA's deputy social media manager, will present case studies from recent space agency news on how to work with multiple platforms to present information tailored to the platforms and audiences.
The "Get It Online" lunch discussion series brings experts in social media and digital communication to the National Press Club for a members-only lunch discussion. The speaker will provide a five to ten minute introduction, and then will answer questions and lead a discussion. Members should plan to be seated by 12 p.m. and may use their member number to order lunch. There is no cost to attend the event, other than the member's own cost of food and beverage. The event will conclude by 1:30 p.m.
Jason Townsend is the Deputy Social Media Manager for NASA where he helps oversee and coordinate over 450 social media accounts covering NASA’s people, missions, and programs. He coordinates between internal social media users and NASA’s external community of fans and followers to tell NASA’s story using tools such as the agency’s flagship Twitter account, @NASA, and pages on Facebook and Google+. Additionally, Mr. Townsend provides guidance to agency leadership on social media best practices, policy, and upcoming social media activities. He also plans and supports successful NASA Socials (formerly Tweetups) events that take online engagement with fans and followers to the next level through behind-the-scenes, in-person experiences.
