TRAIL MILES: 7
GROUP SIZE: 12
RESERVATIONS: Sept. 3
MEETING TIME/PLACE: 9:00 a.m. at the U.S. Forest Service supervisor’s office on West Highway 2 in Libby
LEADERS: Brian Baxter and Lynn Hagarty
Join Forest Service Geologist Lynn Hagarty for a look into the geology of the Cabinet Mountains. The group will conduct a day hike into the wilderness destination of Leigh Lake. The lake is set below Blackwell Glacier and the ice fields and is a great spot to study alpine glaciation, rock types and mineralization as well as to identify geologic processes that have formed our local mountains and lakes. A brief history of mining will also be discussed. Prepare for a full day in the field and bring lunch and water. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended.
