Event Details

This workshop will provide hands on experiences for the participants to georeference historical maps, many of which will be civil war era and before (150 to 200 years old).  A historical map that was originally created on paper will not have an electronic reference to the surface of the earth.  This workshop will explore how to take a map that was original created on paper and reference it to the surface of the earth so that it can be utilized in a geospatial system.  Sources of historical maps will be discussed as well as the use of historical maps within geospatial classes and other subjects.  In addition to the georeferencing of the maps the workshop will provide hands on experiences in the heads up digitization of the maps (georeferenced) into vector shapefiles which can be used with other map data to provide a richer experience for the learner.  Participants can bring their own electronic historical maps (jpeg, tiff, etc.) or use those provided by the instructor.  The concepts discussed in this workshop will also be applicable to modern day maps.  The workshop will utilize version 10 of ArcInfo, accounts to the terminal server will be provided to the participants so they continue their work after the workshop. Online video and printable documents will be available for the participants to use after the workshop.
