Gas Insulated Substations
Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM (PST)
Speaker: Chuck Hand has worked in the electrical power industry since 1962 when he was graduated from Michigan Technological University with a BSEE with an electrical power emphasis. He was with Sargent and Lundy in Chicago as a project engineer for several extra high voltage (EHV) substations at 345kV, 550kV and 765kV. Then Chuck came to Southern California Edison and was assigned to the Apparatus Engineering group specifying transmission substation apparatus, evaluating equipment quality, analyzing failures, and analyzing manufacturer’s proposals. The products that were assigned involved various switching equipment including circuit breakers, disconnecting switches, metalclad switchgear and gas insulated substation. Chuck has been involved in every gas insulated substation installed on or directly connected to the Edison system. Since retiring from Edison, Chuck has worked as a consultant to Edison and was on the IEEE committee to rewrite C37.122, the gas insulated substation standard.
